Pastures, Pumps, and Practical Ranch Skills
#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk

Since this is only my second week of the internship, many of the tasks and experiences I participated in were still very new to me. One of the biggest learning experiences this week was helping move cows on horseback to a different pasture. While I have some experience around livestock, it was interesting to see how cattle are moved in a large ranch setting and how important communication and teamwork are during the process. I also continued learning the daily responsibilities involved in caring for livestock by watering cows, bottle feeding calves, and cleaning bunks and equipment.
Another major learning experience was helping with projects around the ranch, including building gated pipe for irrigation, constructing fences around pivots, and assisting with repairs on water pumps and wells. These were tasks I had very little prior experience with, so it was very interesting to see how much infrastructure and maintenance work is required to keep a cattle operation functioning properly. The week helped me realize that ranching involves much more than just working directly with animals.

One idea I would challenge is the assumption that every ranch operates the same way. During my first two weeks, I have already seen that many management decisions depend on the specific operation, available resources, and goals of the ranch. Whether it is how cattle are moved, how water is managed, or how daily tasks are prioritized, there are often multiple ways to accomplish the same objective. This has shown me that successful ranching requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing conditions rather than following a single set approach.
I would also challenge my own previous understanding of how much work goes on behind the scenes to support livestock production. Before starting this internship, I mainly thought about feeding and caring for animals. However, over the past two weeks I have seen how important fences, water systems, irrigation equipment, and regular maintenance are to the success of the operation. Without these systems functioning properly, caring for the cattle would become much more difficult.

Since I am still early in the internship, I have many questions about how different parts of the ranch operate throughout the year. After helping move cattle this week, I would like to learn more about how grazing decisions are made and what factors determine when cattle are moved from one pasture to another. I am also interested in understanding how ranchers evaluate pasture conditions and forage availability.
I would also like to learn more about irrigation and water management. After helping build gated pipe and work on water systems, I am curious about how irrigation schedules are determined and how ranchers balance water usage throughout the season. Additionally, I would like to gain a better understanding of common maintenance issues with pumps and wells and how experienced ranchers diagnose and fix those problems.
