This week was good learning all around. Early in the week I got to experience a unique view as we got the place handed over to us for several days. It was good to build the mindset of seeking and solving problems and making sure everything that is needing done is getting accomplished.
Some of the jobs of the early week were pivot management, finishing up working on a sprayer, maintaining herd health, and hunting down a bum calf in waist tall rye. Thursday, fortunately, with everyone back, the Halter collars went down, so we woke up to quite the task in front of us as a lot of groups were strip grazing or in poor fenced ground. After some calls with higher ups, it got solved by mid-morning.

The BLM group was about out of grass and needed to be moved this week. I went through and welded expanded metal on all the small metal troughs to protect the float system previously put in. There is a submersible vertical 4″ pump that supplies all water for both the Hoodoo allotments and the aforementioned group. It was plugging up with slime this week from the creek, so that needed continuously cleaned every couple days.
The main take aways from this week of work for me was to see all possible solutions to a problem before executing a solution. It can be easy to get trapped in your preliminary line of thought and not take it any farther when, in reality, there may be much more efficient means than you are developing. When you are short on help every decision and action of the day is important. There is only so much time in the day. When you can’t afford to cut twice, measure twice.
