Accidents, Awareness, and Better Management

This week was a reminder that ranching comes with risks that can never be completely eliminated. No matter how much experience someone has, working with livestock and horses means dealing with unpredictable situations. Seeing accidents happen firsthand reinforced how quickly an ordinary day can change.
One of the more serious incidents this week involved a yearling horse that split her head wide open. The vet was called immediately and stitched her back together that evening. Older horses picked on her so badly that she ran head on into a fence. These things happen, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t try to mitigate them by keeping like aged horses together.
Another reminder of the risks came when Grace fell with Chief and sprained her ankle. Even with experienced riders and well-trained horses, accidents can still happen. Horses and wet grass don’t always mix. This is also something that just happens sometimes and needs to be kept in mind.
These events made me think more about risk management on a ranch. While injuries and accidents cannot always be prevented, good preparation, proper training, quality equipment, and clear communication all help reduce the chances of something going wrong. This week reminded me that successful ranching is not only about caring for livestock but also about doing everything possible to keep both people and animals safe within reason.
