The First Week: Rodeos, Yearlings, and Ranch Work
#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk
When I arrived here this week, I got settled in first and then immediately jumped into helping put the finishing touches on a rodeo arena on the property. Throughout the week, until Friday, we checked and moved yearlings and then did work on the arena. Friday, we prepped for the crowd before they got here. We had a full rodeo here on the ranch for a crowd of about 250, I believe. Saturday was spent checking yearlings and shoeing horses.

The Snake River Ranch has started holding private rodeos here for businesses to bring their employees. Through this internship, I get to help with putting those rodeos on. These rodeos are a shorter production than you’d usually see, and the announcer focuses on history and teaching the crowd about the different events.
We have three separate herds of steers that we ride through to doctor and/or move every Monday-Saturday. That is usually the first order of business for the day. Whoever is riding will get saddled and go check the steers. We pasture rope to doctor. The most common ailments seem to be pink eye and hoof rot. It is quite a bit more wet here than other parts of Wyoming, and I’m sure that could be a contributor.
It’s interesting to see the mix of ag tourism on a working ranch. This area is heavily tourism-based, so it makes sense to cater to that while keeping a yearling operation. Being right next to the Tetons is a unique experience that is a very cool opportunity.
