Learning More About Irrigation
#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk

My experience at work on the ranch this past week consisted of flood irrigation, leading trail rides, moving dirt, moving fence and daily ranch tasks. I have continued to be in a good routine of work on the ranch and have been consistent in my tasks. As the internship is nearing the end, I am trying to learn as many new things as I can, but I am pretty familiar with most aspects of the operation.
Upon reflection of this last week on the ranch, something that I would challenge would be to maybe create a specific routine to get certain daily/weekly tasks done instead of doing it in a random order or a little bit at a time. Especially at this point in the summer, our crew has expanded quite a bit since the beginning. I think that having a plan or some structure will always contribute to efficiency, but I also understand that in this industry there are a lot of unforeseen variables that might prevent you from completing tasks how you envisioned them. Overall, I would say that for daily tasks it would be efficient if everyone had their own specific roles.
Some questions I have from this week are mostly about the irrigation. I am still wondering about how flood irrigation compares in efficiency to other methods of irrigation, but I think it might also depend on the kinds of grasses that are growing, and most pastures in this area are flood irrigated so it might be difficult to draw an accurate conclusion. We have been moving our dams pretty much every day, so I also wonder what difference it would make to move them on a different schedule.
My plan moving forward is to continue to expand my knowledge and skills as much as I can, I plan to do this by asking more questions and continue to apply myself to my work and projects as much as I can control. I also plan to continue to pursue beneficial relationships with people in the industry. I will keep my mind open to new experiences and focus on attention to detail!
