Maintenance, Management, and Making Space
#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk
This week mostly consisted of maintenance: chores, organization, and other various daily tasks. On Monday, we continued working on the living space in the barn. It’s fun to see it coming together and beginning to look like a room, not just construction.
Sometimes, completing one task leads to other jobs. For example, we put out a cleanup bull, which meant we needed to sort out a few heifers that we didn’t want bred by the bull, and a few pairs that we’ll start day-weaning (separating the calf during the day only) over the next weeks.
I am still curious about the difference between certain cow breeds. The bull we put out was pure-bred Simmental. Aside from coloring, how does Simmental differ from Angus, Maine-Anjou, or Limousin? How would incorporating various genes change the herd genetics?
We also did a fair amount of organization later in the week. I swept out the barn, and we cleaned up some junk piles with the skidsteer. Nearly every day, I cleaned the AirBnBs for guests arriving in the evening. Doing all the cleaning made me consider how important organization is for any operation. Tidying may be time-consuming, but it makes the area more presentable and makes it easier to find things and get jobs done. In the future, I think it is important to maintain order in high-traffic areas, so we hopefully don’t have to do big cleanup jobs very often.
