From Putting Out Mineral to Putting Shoes On

#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk

This week started with moving steers and putting out mineral on Monday. On Tuesday, we hosted another rodeo. Wednesday was checking a group of calves that we received and then riding through steers. Thursday, I shod horses most of the day. Friday was another day of being horseback and putting out mineral. Saturday, we doctored calves and moved cows and steers.

Snake River Ranch has some Fall calvers over at their place in Burlington and a few here at headquarters. We received 90 or so this week and figured we may as well run the calves into the corrals to get doctoring done in a higher quantity at once. So that’s how we spent Saturday morning.

I had shod horses for four years full-time before starting school. I am able to utilize those skills to help with the ranch horses here. On Thursday, I got three horses shod in between other tasks. We have a nice shoeing/tack area here at headquarters, and it makes the job nice.

Putting out mineral here is done with a side-by-side. There are a lot of irrigation ditches in these pastures. Putting out mineral requires a guy to learn the pastures pretty quick so you can navigate the ditches. On occasion, the ditches may not be crossable in certain areas; I found out the hard way. So every day and every week being out horseback or putting out mineral, I get to learn the layout of the pastures better and better.
