Learning How to Navigate the Tractors

#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk

This week we focused a lot on farming and running tractors due to haying season being right around the corner. Learning how to run the tractor has been a challenge but also very rewarding. While running it is easy, there is often a lot going on while trying to drive. Between making sure that the equipment is running properly and trying not to mess up the fields, it can be a challenge. Once you get the hang of driving the tractor it is pretty simple for the most part, at least until you mess up.

I think next week I can challenge the concepts of how there isn’t much farming that happens on a ranch. Over the past few weeks I have learned that there is a lot more farming that happens on most ranches than there is handling livestock. A lot of people think that ranching is handling livestock when really it is doing thinks like fixing fence, waters and farming. For the most part there isn’t a lot of day to day handling of livestock especially once calving season is over.

I still have some questions about how the books work and also how they handle all of the money that comes in and out of their operation. I think that it is important to know exactly what is going in and out of your operation and exactly how much it is. There is a lot of operations that don’t know what they have coming in and going out of their business when it comes to money and often times that is how they fail.

I plan to use what I’ve learned this past week to help me grow my own business one day. I also plan to use it to help me be for self sustainable. When you can produce the feed you need for your livestock it can help you both save costs and not have to rely on someone else to be able to feed your animals.
