A Little Bit of Haying

#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk

This week we mostly raked hay and moved sheep. We moved the yearling ewes from the homestead pasture to the pasture up by the house. We gathered in the homestead and then pushed them across highway 50 to the west pasture. We also started to cut the oat and barley fields, so I spent a good chunk of time in the tractor raking hay.

I don’t have a big concept from this week that I would challenge, but the one thing I might challenge is haying all of your oats and barley instead of combining some of it. I think that in certain years you should combine some of your oats and barley so that you have a different feed source for your livestock besides hay.

At this point I don’t have many questions. I have gotten to learn a lot about how a ranch works. I’ve gotten to learn everything from branding and docking to haying. It has been a great experience and I hope to get to do it again next summer.

I plan to use these things in my own operation one day. I think that they are all useful things and can help me make decisions on how to run my own operation. It can help me when deciding what hay to plant, when to cut my hay, and when to hay certain fields and when to combine. It can also help me decide when to dock sheep, brand and move livestock.
