Practicing an Unique Internship Skill

#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk

My work experience this week consisted of leading trail rides, moving cattle, moving irrigation dams, building and fixing fence, moving dirt, creating trails, and absolutely crushing our daily tasks. In some ways, every week I do the same things, but at the same time there are new ways to experience those things. Every trail ride brings up new learning opportunities like teaching people how to ride horses and behave around them. I have been understanding the irrigation system and getting creative with flooding the fields. Also I have been operating more equipment and solidifying my operation skills. Another cool thing that I have been able to experience is getting better at speaking Spanish because there are some employees here that speak little to no English.

Some issues that we had this week were with communication, especially with our events calendar, so that is an idea that I might challenge from this week. I think it would be helpful to have one big calendar that everyone has access to and maybe posted in the shop or somewhere everyone can see it. Other than that I think it would be beneficial to go over events every day during our morning meetings, to double check and be sure that everyone is on the same page and that we are not missing any events. There were a few days that our manager was gone so maybe others need to step up during those times.

The big question that I have from this week is what the ration of income looks like for the ranch from the events that are held here, the passive income, and the cattle. I know that the events and land leasing make a lot of money for the ranch and those things are very expensive in this area, but the cattle also make a lot of money but I’m not sure how the final makings compare. As someone in management it would be very important to know and understand those things, but I am mostly just curious about it.

My current plan for the next week is to soak up every second, because I only have a few weeks left and the whole summer has flown by. I feel confident in the things that I have learned and my efficiency in any task I am given here. I am going to continue to complete my work with pride, try to learn new things as they come at me and keep asking questions. If there’s something new I’m hoping to learn, it’s to become better at speaking Spanish, so I will try to use every opportunity to practice it.
