Regional Impact by Soil

#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk

Some points that I have learned this week wasn’t focused on cattle, it more focused with plants and soil. From this week I gathered an understanding of how soil temp causes germination of seeds. Here in Lyman, the soil temp is still too low for tap root alfalfa to germinate. As well, the soil complexion has a lot of clay in it, inhibiting water to spread and thus leading to pools of water – which is not ideal for germination. Another thing I learned is that mustard is a dewormer; while not as effective as dewormer paste, it still works to an extent.

What I would challenge from this week is understanding what feed is best for cows. The reason I would challenge this is because throughout this week I have gained an understanding about how some grasses have a higher protein for cows than others. I would challenge that so I could understand what grass would be best to feed cow/calf pairs.

Some questions that I have are things such as when would be the most ideal time to turn out cows to pasture. As well as, what is the ideal mixture for hay to sustain cows until we would turn them out to pasture. Why I ask these is because eventually I would like to run cows, and this would help me grasp how to feed properly.

What I plan to do with what I have gathered this week is continue understanding how plant have different portions and can change how cows milk protein content. As well I will continue what I have learned to better understand how the ranch operates. This is what I will do with the information I Have learned this week.
