A Check In: My Internship Horse
#bfrdpwy #aginternship #RightRisk
This week is an update about the horse I started to break at the beginning of the internship. I am now riding him regularly. I rode him on the mountain a couple of times and have now been able to move cows with him for the first time. He listened well and responded to what I had taught him in the corrals over the last couple of weeks while we were moving cows.
If I were to challenge one thing from learning how to break a horse, it would be that the typical approach of throwing a saddle on and riding the horse until it stops bucking. This isn’t the most efficient or best way to break a horse, in my opinion. Building trust between the trainer and the horse is the most important. Quality ground work helps build that relationship. Understanding how the horse responds to the trainer and seeing the trust grow overtime not only builds the confidence of the rider, but also shows the horse how to trust its rider.
My boss lent me videos by Buck Branaman at the beginning of my time here. I will continue to watch these and gain as much knowledge as I can about breaking this horse. I am eager to continue training my horse through my remaining time in the internship. It is my hopes that by the time I complete my program time, he will move well and be able to sort cows effectively. Currently, I still have questions about communicating with the horse, and how to train certain maneuvers. With the help of the videos and my boss, I am ready to learn as much as possible to best break this horse.
